The Sleep of Reason
Partial re-creation of installation piece based on the Goya etching
Shaped, etched, and inked aluminum lithography plates
For this installation I made shaped pieces from used aluminum lithography plates (about 1/32" thick) in the following way. After coating a plate with acid-resistant ground, I drew the outline of the intended shape with white chalk. I then followed that outline with an etching needle, to remove enough ground so that a continuous 1/8"-wide area of metal was exposed. After the plate was etched in ferric chloride for three hours, the interior shape was scissored out of the surrounding plate by the acid.
Into one side of that shape I then drew/scraped many texture lines with the etching needle and returned the piece to the acid so the lines would be etched. After that etch, I removed the acid-resist coating and filled the incised lines with ink, to accentuate them. The seven finished pieces ranged in diameter from 1 1/2 feet to 3 feet and were hung by thin wire from the ceiling pipes in the corridor leading to the printmaking studio where they were created.

Etching inspired by the Goya etching "The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters," 14" × 5"
Shaped, etched piece of aluminum, used in the Goya-inspired installation "The Sleep of Reason." When the piece had been etched and cleaned of the acid-resistant coating, etching ink was deposited in the etched lines and allowed to dry, in order to heighten the line work in the metal.

The etched brass and copper gargoyles, containing open-work areas, were suspended by thin wires from a disk that was adjacent to the toy theater's inner ceiling and thus was hidden from view. Perpendicular to that disk, at its center, was glued a wooden dowel that passed through a hole in the roof of the theater and was glued to a parallel disk on top of the structure, so that a "sandwich" of disk, roof, disk was formed. To the upper side of the top disk was glued a second dowel, at a perpendicular, near the disk's edge. It served as the handle by which the viewer could rotate the device, whereby the hanging figures formed a nightmare carousel, casting filigreed shadows as they revolved around the sleeping foam-core man seated at the center of the theater's stage.
